Camels carrying building materials to Tel Aviv to build the new stadium for the 1st Maccabiah (1932)

October 15, 2022 by Project Max Team

In mandatory Israel of 1932 there was no stadium, no athletes track, no swimming pool… the place was not ready for the Maccabiah that was about to take place soon. Yosef Yekutieli and the other organizers of the Maccabiah found quick soluitons – JNF gave land for the stadium, Macabi organiztion gave funding and Tel Aviv citizens built it. They also used a part of Haifa Port as a seawater sqimming pool, and burnt cinders given by Palestine Railways for a running track. In this photo from 1932, the camels are carrying materials to Tel Aviv to build the stadium, from Ramla railway station.
